Let’s get moving on transport

24 Feb, 2010 08:46 AM
A VERY important meeting will take place next Tuesday on View Street as part of a plan to develop a much-needed road transport strategy for Bendigo.

It is a key requirement of this generation to adequately plan and consider the future demands on our existing road network, and how additional roads will be needed in the years ahead.

In recent times, we have seen the development of the Inner Box Network of roads around the fringe of the Bendigo CBD, but it has been the closure of some roads - rather than the addition or expansion of others - that has generated the most feedback in the community.

It is becoming more and more difficult to access the centre of Bendigo from the booming western and north-western suburbs.

There’s no doubt that existing infrastructure cannot cope with any major increase in use or demand. And despite the well-publicised benefits of catching a bus or riding a bicycle, only a minor proportion of travel into the heart of the city is undertaken in these ways.

Commuter trains from the north, west and south may be a viable option in future years, but greater numbers of cars will require an increase in the number of parking spaces provided.

The development of a sound strategy is enriched only if and when good ideas and feedback are provided by the community. This is our chance to have a say about the future shape, look and feel of transport infrastructure in our city.

Getting it right will not be easy, but the responsibility to do so is shared by all of us.
