IT was a flawless return to council duties for Eppalock ward’s Rod Campbell last night.
Cr Campbell has defied the odds and resumed his council duties after more than a year of sick leave.
The fact that Cr Campbell is alive is a miracle – returning to work is beyond belief.
He rolled into the council chamber in is electric wheelchair.
To say his colleagues were happy to see him back at a council table he used to chair as mayor is an understatement.
But Cr Campbell is a now two-for-one deal, with his wife Alison by his side.
Mrs Campbell sat at the council table and voted for her husband on his instruction.
Cr Campbell describes his wife as his arms and legs.
The duo operated like a well-oiled machine.
Cr Campbell sat in his wheelchair alongside councillor James Reade and opposite councillor Rod Fyffe at the end of the council table.
His wife sat at 90 degrees to him and they exchanged whispers throughout the meeting.
Cr Campbell would nod to Mrs Campbell and she would raise her hand to cast his vote.
He would again nod his head to endorse the decision when his colleagues voted.
Mrs Campbell would use her finger as a guide as her husband read from his notes and they shared page-turning responsibilities.
Cr Campbell’s return last night sent strong signals.
It shows disability is no barrier.
It also demonstrated how organisations can adapt their practices to support people with special needs.
Welcome back Cr Campbell, you’ve been missed.
