The AFL should be congratulated for its community camps.
They are a brilliant initiative, allowing people in regional areas access to elite Aussie Rules players that they would never normally have.
You just had to be in Maryborough yesterday to see the level of interest from the community as Essendon kicked off its camp for this year.
For local children, having the opportunity to meet their heroes and take part in clinics can be all it takes for them to stay involved in sport and enjoy a healthier lifestyle.
For many it can also be the inspiration to dream of a sporting career.
Maryborough’s Stewart Crameri is perhaps one of the greatest examples for the region’s youngsters to follow.
Sure, Crameri was blessed with a certain amount of natural ability, but his dedication to following his dream and never giving up until he had reached it can be a lesson to children – and adults – in any pursuit.
Crameri didn’t have it all his own way.
He missed out on playing TAC Cup – where most of the best young players are noticed and drafted from – and had to prove himself from the VFL reserves right through to the AFL.
He enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2011, but rather than revel in his success, he has immediately reset his sights on achieving greater things in years to come.
Setbacks are a part of life, but it is how you respond afterwards that determines your success.
Many of us could learn a lesson from Stewart Crameri.
