IT’S now three days since
The Advertiser revealed the closure of Bendigo’s much-loved, but financially troubled, ice-skating stadium, and questions are beginning to surface about what happens next.
In particular, there is the query as to the fate of an interest-free loan provided by the City of Greater Bendigo with the intention of helping secure the stadium’s future just under two years ago, and how much, if indeed any, of the original sum can be recovered.
It is difficult not to feel sorry for the scores of hardworking volunteers, skaters and their families who poured so much time and effort into resurrecting the Golden Square facility more than once, and then tried to keep it going.
These same people now face the prospect of having to commute to Melbourne to enjoy the passion and pastime they once were able to access right here in Bendigo.
A lot of emotional capital and selfless service has gone into keeping the ice-skating centre afloat, while seemingly, the centre’s bank account continued to dwindle away.
It is imperative now that a proper investigation is held into the failure of the centre, and how the interest-free loan proved ineffectual when it was needed most.
Ratepayers deserve to know not only that this will occur, but that the outcome of such an important process will be made public and any lessons learned from all of this will be used to guide future decision-making processes.
