Bendigo water polo players warm up for country titles

09 Feb, 2010 10:33 AM
THE Victorian Country Water Polo Championships will be held this weekend in Wodonga.

The APCO Bendigo Water Polo competition will be represented by two men’s and a women’s team.

Other centres to compete include Albury-Wodonga, Sale, Alexandra and Geelong.

An interesting twist to the men’s representation is the Bendigo entry of the APCO Bendigo old boys team.

This team is made up of players who won the Victorian Country Water Polo Championship 20 years ago.

At that time, Bendigo was in the middle of a seven-year winning streak at the Victorian Country Water Polo Championships.

Despite some casualties along the way, the core of the team remains.

Dean Spencely, Ian and Bruce Symons have been playing continuously with the Bendigo team, but this year will play a key part in the old boys’ team.

Another Symons’ brother, Peter was on track to play this year, but a health scare in December has led him to being appointed as non-playing coach.

A legend returning to the pool will be Paul Edebone.

Geoff Nicholls, Brett Leahy, Darren Scoble and John Reid are other players from that successful 1990 team.

The second team that Bendigo has entered is represented by this summer's APCO Bendigo water polo competition players.

Big things are expected from the likes of Dave Jansen, Jacob Carroll, Marcus Arandt and prolific goalscorer Dan Carew.

The APCO Bendigo women’s team will be well represented by Nicky Ridley, Sam Hommelhoff, Molly Pridham, Rosie Coldwell and goalkeeper Laura Stahl.

In all, 36 players will be representing Bendigo on the weekend.

In last Thursday night’s APCO Bendigo water polo competition, Couttas scored a 9-3 win in the senior division clash with Stingrays.

In game two, Westpac defeated Sharks, 7-5.

In the women’s division, Mermaids beat Dolphins, 9-2.

Draw for this Thursday’s fourth round of the APCO Bendigo water polo competition at Bendigo Aquatic Centre:

7pm, men: Stingrays v Westpac.

7.45pm, women: Dolphins v Mermaids.

8.30pm, men: Couttas v Sharks.
