THE top four teams on the SportsPower Premier League ladder will do battle in today’s 16th round of the Bendigo Tennis Association season.
The ladder-leading Bendigo Lawn will face fourth-placed Spring Gully Bigpond, and second and third, Spring Gully Brougham Arms and Epsom Butterflies do battle.
Bigpond will play Lawn on courts 9, 10 and 11 at the Bendigo Bank tennis complex in Nolan Street.
Lawn has won its past five matches and will start hot favourite.
Bigpond scored an 8-4 win against Lawn in round nine.
Bigpond has beaten Lawn on both occasions this year and won’t mind going into the match as the underdogs.
In both losses to Bigpond the Lawn have not had their strongest teams.
Captain and league No.1 Curt Garwood missed the most recent clash and will make a big difference, along with gun Leroy Miller.
Bigpond will be hoping Matt Conroy, Jack Baker, Leon Retallick and Reubin Ellis can stay competitive against Curt Garwood, Miller, Ward Garwood and Nick Bath.
The experienced combination of Mandy Connors-Butson and Tamara Wright will take on the youthful exuberance of Eliza Long and Tayla Stenta.
Although Connors-Butson and Wright might have the advantage in the doubles, the youngsters will be tough to beat in singles.
Verdict: Lawn to win 8-4.
Epsom Butterflies play Spring Gully Brougham Arms on courts 18, 19 and 20 in Nolan Street.
The Broughie will be determined to rebound from last week’s 8-4 loss to Lawn.
Epsom will be hoping that Matt Hartland and Shane Burke can contiune their strong form against Jamie Brown and Travis Toner.
In the lower order, Michael Nhill and Robert Jefferies will be tested by the Cox brothers, Stephen and Shane.
The Broughie’s dominant sister combination of Jessica Hartland and Bronwyn Osborne will need to put family allegiances aside, when they battle their older sister Danielle Bowles and teammate Jayne St Clair.
Verdict: Brougham Arms to win 7-5.
Castlemaine will face Strathdale Park Storm on courts one, four and five.
Storm will be looking to keep its slim finals chances alive.
The Maine will look for Leigh Campbell, Pat McMillan and Alyssa Cole to play well against the likes of Terry Smith, Michael Smyth and Tova Penno.
Storm to win on games difference.
