Sweden's star shines

23 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
THE world’s number one junior tennis player, Daniel Berta dominated in yesterday’s qualifying rounds for the Australian Open junior championship on Bendigo’s courts.

The reigning Wimbledon and French Open junior champion, Berta began the day’s play on the Bendigo Bank complex courts in Nolan Street with a 6-2 6-1 win against Japan’s Toma Kozakai.

The Swedish ace then outpointed Australia’s Andrew Whittington, 6-4 6-2.

Earlier in the day, Whittington beat No.11 seed Reiner Moolman from South Africa, 6-3 6-7 (6) 6-3.

The Whittington and Moolman clash lasted almost 2 1/2 hours.

After a stunning victory in Thursday’s play, Carisbrook’s Mitchell Burman was outpoined by Thomas Price in yesterday’s clash.

Price won 6-1 6-1 in 67 minutes.

Eight places in the boys and girls draw for next week’s Australian Open junior championship to be played at Melbourne Park were up for grabs.

The boys qualifiers included six seeded players - Berta, Latvia’s Mikelis Libietis, Sweden’s Robin Olin, Poland’s Maciej Smola, and Korea’s Jung-Woong Na.

Also through after a hectic round of qualifying matches were Australia’s Jarryd Chaplin and Korea’s Jea Moon Lee.

In the girls singles, Australia’s Sophie Letcher and Alexandra Nancarrow figured in the top eight.

Having played in Bendigo at last year’s W.M. Loud International, which was won by Alicia Molik, Letcher marked her return to central Victoria with a 6-4 7-5 win against fourth seed, Thailand’s Napatsakorn Sankaew.

Letcher’s winning run included a dramatic 7-6 (5) 7-5 win against Japan’s Yuki Ito.

The Letcher and Ito contest went for 2hours 7minutes.

Number one seed in the girls draw, Canada’s Marianne Jodoin beat ninth seed Abigail Tere-Apisah from Papua New Guinea, 6-4 6-2.

China’s Min Liu advanced after two hard-fought wins.

Liu beat Australia’s Brooke Hardy, 6-0 2-6 6-3, and followed up with a 7-6 (4) 6-4 victory against Ukraine’s Elizaveta Ianchuk.

Also through to next week’s play at Melbourne Park were Japan’s Miyu Kato and Eri Hozumi, India’s Rishika Sunkara, and Kristyna Pliskova from the Czech Republic.
