TENNIS really is a family affair for Sophie Letcher, who yesterday won her way into the main draw of this week’s William Loud Bendigo International. The 17-year-old comes from a family rich with tennis heritage. Her father Cliff reached number 52 in the world and mother Catherine reached 180 in the world in their days of professional tennis. The William Loud Tennis International is also of special significance to the Letcher family, with Cliff growing up in Pyramid Hill, north of Bendigo. The success does not stop there for the Letcher family, with Sophie’s older brother Chris also playing tennis internationally and Clint teaching tennis in America.Letcher showed in her qualifying match yesterday that she too has talent, with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 win against New Zealand’s Katherine Westbury. Now based on the Gold Coast at the Pro One Tennis Academy, Letcher is positive about her chances in Bendigo.“I’m just going to do my best and just go out there and have nothing to lose,’’ she said.“I had two really good matches in qualifying yesterday, too, so I feel really good. I’m just feeling really confident in my game.’’Letcher is edging closer to success in 2009, qualifying for the Pro Tour event in Darwin and reaching the second round in Ipswich.Letcher also made it through qualifying in an Asian Tennis Federation event in Bangkok. She will take on 19-year-old Japanese player Shiho Akita in the first round of the main draw today.
