Lawn's sights on top

16 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM
BENDIGO Lawn will be aiming to take top spot on the premier ladder for the first time this season when it takes on Castlemaine in today’s Bendigo Tennis Association clash.

The Lawn and Castlemaine will play on courts 13, 14, and 15 at the Bendigo Lawn Tennis Club in Barnard Street.

If Lawn can win nine sets or more in the round 13 clash, it will knock Spring Gully Brougham Arms from the top rung.

Lawn has recruited the highly-talented Leroy Miller during the mid-season break.

Miller, 16, returned to Bendigo last month and has worked hard on his game.

Miller will likely join captain and league No.1 Curt Garwood in the number one and two positions against Castlemaine’s Leigh Campbell and Pat McMillan.

Ward Garwood moves to number three to team up with Nick Bath against Dean Harris and Nathan Mitchell.

Castlemaine will be hoping Alice Tucker and Alyssa Cole can win their share of sets against the powerful Tamara Wright and Mandy Connors-Butson.

Lawn to win 10-2.

Epsom Butterflies will be striving to keep its top two chances alive when it takes on Strathdale Park Storm on courts four, five and 12 in Barnard Street.

The grasscourt experience of Storm’s Terry Smith and Michael Smyth will test Epsom’s Matt Hartland and Michael Nihill.

In the lower order, Epsom’s Robert Jefferies and Jono Guy take on Storm’s Zoltan Smyth and Danny Watson.

Danielle Bowles and Jane St Clair are in top form for the Butteflies and should continue the trend against Michelle Rodwell and Narelle Smyth.

Epsom to win 7-5.

Spring Gully Bigpond will face a dangerous test against South Bendigo on courts one, two and three at the Barnard Street complex.

Although Bigpond will start favourite, South Bendigo is a talented team.

With Eliza Long out of the Bigpond line-up, Heather Robbins faces a huge task.

South Bendigo’s Paige Ipsen and Maxine Everitt will be keen to start the year with some victories.

Bigpond’s Jack Baker and Barry Green will play at one and two, with their opponents likely to be Alistair Baker and Nathan Bowie.

Grant Leader and Frank Ryan will take on Gully’s Leon Retallick and Reuben Ellis.

This match may not be decided until the mixed, with Bigpond to win on games difference.

Spring Gully Brougham Arms has the bye.
