Ebden dominates final

07 Dec, 2009 09:36 AM
MATTHEW Ebden’s superb form continued yesterday when he took out the men’s final of the William Loud Bendigo International.

The 19-year-old West Australian crushed James Lemke 6-1 6-1 to win his third Pro Tour tournament in four weeks.

Ebden was faultless in the final. The sixth-seed hit winner after winner, with his forehand and backhand drives and crisp volleys a feature.

“That’s probably one of the best matches I’ve played,’’ an elated Ebden said after the win.

“To play that well in a big final on this surface . . . I couldn’t be happier with the way I played.’’

Ebden saved three break points at 1-1 in the opening set before stepping up a gear.

He reeled off nine-straight games, with Lemke powerless to stop the South African-born Ebden.

“James is the kind of player who just gets so many balls back into the court,’’ he said.

“We had a couple of tight games early on, but once I got rid of my nerves I freed up a bit and hit a couple of winners and went from there.’’

Lemke looked physically and mentally tired, having played two long three-set matches in the quarter-finals against fourth-seeded Jose Statham and in Saturday’s semi-final against second-seeded Greg Jones.

In contrast, Ebden didn’t drop a set all week and only had to play one set in Saturday’s semi-final.

Ebden’s opponent Colin Ebelthite retired hurt because of a groin strain after Ebden took out first set 7-5.

Ebden’s all-court game packed too many guns for Lemke.

“From when I started to play tennis I’ve always liked to get to the net and volley,’’ Ebden said.

“Being good at the net gives you so many more options for your game.

“You need those options these days because the players are so good.’’

Ebden’s confidence is sky high going into next week’s Australian Open wildcard play-off at Melbourne Park.

“Everyone dreams of playing in a grand slam main draw, so I’d love to play well at the wildcard play-off and get a spot in the Australian Open,’’ he said.

“Winning in Bendigo is a stepping stone to wildcard play-off and the bigger tournaments in Australia in January.

“Hopefully, I can keep this form up and take my game to another level.’’
