Bendigo Fighting Miners to tackle Puckapunyal in country division grand final

30 Aug, 2010 10:55 PM
THE Bendigo Fighting Miners have qualified for the Victorian Rugby Union Country Division grand final after defeating Cobram 27-15 in the preliminary final at Koonoomoo last Saturday.

The Fighting Miners did it the hard way after Cobram took the honours in the first half.

The Miners trailed 7-15 at the break after conceding soft tries to the home team in the third and 40th minutes of the half.

The first came when Miners half-back Steve MacDonald failed to clear sloppy ball at the back of the scrum. The second was from an intercept try.

Sandwiched between these was an excellent maiden try by Miners lock Brendan Westley.

The Miners’ performance in the first half was below par with sloppy ball from the set play, poor and aimless kicking and little use of the dangerous three-quarters.

This changed in the second half with the introduction of veteran prop Travis Henderson into the playing line-up.

The Miners hit the lead in the 15th minute of the second half following a try to Jesse Tuitupou, a conversion and a penalty goal by Josh Manderson.

From this point onwards, the Miners took charge, running in two more tries through Steve MacDonald and Michael Crichton.

The Tyson’s Reef Hotel player of the day award went to Konrad Fepuleai whose charges from the base of the scrum and fringes of the rucks were particularly effective.

Next Saturday, the Miners travel to Puckapunyal to contest the grand final against the Boars, kicking off at 3pm.
