 Bowlers invade Bendigo

Bowlers invade Bendigo

25 Sep, 2009 09:35 AM
MANY of Victoria’s top bowlers will raid Bendigo greens next February for qualifying rounds of the Australian Open.

Matches will be played from February 8 to 12 as bowlers vie to contest the finals in Shepparton.

Bendigo hosted last summer’s qualifying rounds of the Australian Open.

Secretary of the Bendigo District Bowls Association, Geoff Howes said this year’s event was a resounding success.

“The BDBA again looks forward to teaming up with the Royal Victorian Bowls Association and Victorian Ladies Bowling Association to host this prestigious event,” Howes said.

Once the qualifying rounds are run, bowlers will head to Shepparton Park and Mooroopna Park to contest the Australian Open finals.

“Through our links with the City of Greater Bendigo, government, accommodation and tourism representatives, transport providers, member clubs, and media, participants and spectators are guaranteed of an excellent experience,” Howes said.

The RVBA and VLBA said many factors played a part in Bendigo being chosen to again host the Australian Open qualifying rounds: Bendigo is easily accessible from Melbourne, but also may attract greater regional and rural entries than have previously travelled to Melbourne for this event.

In close proximity to each other, Bendigo has 12 clubs with 26 outstanding grass greens and associated facilities (176-180 rinks).

Country Week traditionally caters for around 700 bowlers as hosted by BDBA and demonstrates their capacity to conduct such a major event.

The print media, radio and TV provide great support for this major event.

There will be about 200 markers and officials available, with more training sessions being run in October and November.

The City Of Greater Bendigo is a key supporter of the event, especially (but not exclusively) through its Marketing and Major Events arm.

Accommodation providers will work with council to support entrants into the event through tourism and accommodation packs.

There will be no other major events in Bendigo when the bowls classic is run, thereby assuring that hundreds of motel beds are available.

Transport to and from Tullamarine for interstate competitors is already provided via bus shuttle, but extra services are being assessed.

Train services to Bendigo are excellent.

The Calder Freeway is now complete and road travel is excellent.

The RVBA and VLBA, supported by Bowls Australia, will host several major events at Darebin International Sports Centre in 2009-10 as a means of ensuring the new greens are 'played in'.

It is anticipated the Australian Open will return to DISC in 2011.
