FORMER central Victorians Sharelle McMahon and Rebecca Bulley have been selected in the Australian Diamonds Commonwealth Games squad.
It will be McMahon’s fourth Commonwealth Games, while Bulley will make her Games debut in Delhi.
Bulley had an oustanding 2010 season with the New South Wales Swifts, winning the Player of the Year award.
The defender, who played her junior netball with Calivil United before moving to Sandhurst in the Bendigo Football Netball League, said it was tough competition to earn a place in the Commonwealth Games team.
“I’m really excited and really relieved to make the team,” Bulley said.
“Everyone in the squad of 15 has been playing awesome and there was obviously a lot on the line, so everyone was playing well and not holding anything back.”
Bulley said the Diamonds were keen for revenge after New Zealand defeated Australia in the gold medal game at the 2006 Games in Melbourne.
“A gold medal would be awesome. You don’t go to the Commonwealth Games and only expect to get second place,” she said.
“We always have tough battles with New Zealand, so they will be the team to beat. Jamaica and England will also be really tough.’’
McMahon, a dual winner of the Bendigo Advertiser-WIN Television Sports Star of the Year award, has been named captain of the Australian team.
McMahon and Bulley will join Catherine Cox, Susan Fuhrmann, Laura Geitz, Renae Hallinan, Mo-onia Gerrard, Kimberlee Green, Natalie Medhurt, Susan Pratley and Natalie von Bertough at this year’s Games.
McMahon, vice-captain von Bertouch, Cox, Furmann and Pratley were all members of Australia’s silver medal Games squad in Melbourne four years ago.
The squad will continue its series against New Zealand this Thursday after winning the series opener on Sunday night in Adelaide.
