GISBORNE outpointed Sandhurst in the battle of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football-Netball League’s top A grade netball teams on Saturday afternoon.
The Gisborne line-up ended Sandhurst’s winning streak in a 47-34 victory on the Gardiner Reserve court.
Tiarna Newman earned the four votes in the ASM Netballer of the Year award, and Simone Neal-Trevallin also starred for the red, white and blue.
Best players for Sandhurst were Claire Gibbs and Brianna Dalrymple-Monro.
The defeat was Sandhurst’s first since the season opener against Kangaroo Flat.
Eaglehawk scored a crucial win against Maryborough on the Princes Park court.
In the battle of the boroughs, Eaglehawk won 35-27, and skipped a win clear of the sixth-placed Strathfieldsaye Storm.
Christie Carmody, playing coach Amanda O’Neill and Katrina Murfett were Eaglehawk’s best.
The best for Maryborough was Alisha Chadwick.
Golden Square won at Strathfieldsaye by 15 goals.
Led by the play of Erica Schippers and Lucy Spalding, the blue and gold beat the Storm, 45-30.
Best for Strathfieldsaye were Kristen Wilson and Gemma Ralli.
Kangaroo Flat’s attack was in hot form against Castlemaine at Fulton Hogan Oval at Dower Park.
The Flat won 50-6.
Benita Swatton, Lauren Cowling and Brooke Emmerson were Kangaroo Flat’s best.
Kelly Dunn played well for Castlemaine.
In the A reserve competition, Kangaroo Flat passed the 60-goal mark in the clash with Castlemaine.
The Kangaroos won 62-12.
In the closest contest of the day, Eaglehawk won on Maryborough’s court by five goals.
Golden Square beat the higher-placed Strathfieldsaye Storm, 51-40.
In B grade, Gisborne beat the ladder-leading Sandhurst by four goals.
The red, white and blue won 33-29.
The second-placed Strathfieldsaye marked its 11th victory of the season when it beat Golden Square by 17 goals.
The day’s netball began with the 17-under teams on court.
Maryborough beat Eaglehawk by six goals, and Golden Square fought on for a 40-36 win against Strathfieldsaye on the Tannery Lane court.
South Bendigo scored 56 goals against Kyneton, and Kangaroo Flat beat Castlemaine by 17 goals.
