Wilkinson eyes racing in Europe

24 Dec, 2011 04:00 AM
The race is on for Bendigo motor bike star Mark Wilkinson to achieve his dream of riding in Europe next year.

Wilkinson has been offered a place with one of the United Kingdom’s leading superstock racing teams, but there is one sticking point – money.

Wilkinson must fund his position on the team, which means he needs to raise $60,000 by the end of January.

The 22-year-old has committed to selling almost everything he owns – including his car and racing bikes from this year – to take advantage of the position with the Seton Tuning team.

“Life’s a bigger picture, you’ve got to try and take these opportunities while you can,” Wilkinson said.

“The opportunities that it will give me in the future are much bigger than in Australia.”

Wilkinson was scouted by the UK team during the final race meeting of the Australian Superstock 600 Championship in Phillip Island last month.

Despite racing with a fractured vertebrae from a crash in Broadford just four weeks earlier, he impressed enough to be offered the ride.

“They had a look at a couple of different riders, but I was the only guy they’ve offered a ride. It just depends whether I can come up with the funds.”

Wilkinson’s strong form in the Superstock Championships was a key to being offered the ride with the Essex-based team.

Heading into the final round, Wilkinson was third in the standings.

After a week of intensive hydrotherapy at the Australian Institute of Sport he was able to ride at Phillip Island.

“The pain wasn’t too bad,” Wilkinson said. “It was just a real big confidence-knocker, especially leaning into corners.”

“It was at its worst as soon as I got off the bike when my back muscles would spasm.”

Although he struggled through qualifying, Wilkinson managed to move through the field in the three races to finish 9th, 10th and 10th and hang on to third place overall.

He is about to begin physiotherapy and chiropractic treatment to prepare himself for next season – hopefully in the UK.

Appreciative of his sponsors and the support of his family, Wilkinson is appealing for donations to help his dream become reality.

The UK Superstock season begins in February and Wilkinson is eyeing the series as a stepping-stone to even bigger events.
