IT was a special triumph for the Kangaroo Flat Bowls Club’s Carter family when they won the recent regional triples championship.
Father John and sons Dean and Simon Carter convincingly won the triples championship with a 21-7 victory over their Campaspe rivals at Rochester.
With the victory the Carters have now qualified for the last 16 of the state triples championship, which will be held in Bendigo in April during the Bowls Victoria Champions Week.
To qualify for the regional championship, the Carters defeated Bendigo’s Ian Ross, Ron Angove and Mick Manning to claim the Bendigo Bowls Division triples title in December.
“We’re the first family in Bendigo to win this, so it was a really good achievement with my brother and old man,” Dean said yesterday.
Kangaroo Flat president Mick Bickley said the club was proud of the achievement of the Carters, who were recruited to the Flat from South Bendigo four years ago.
“We were looking for some younger players a few years ago, so we recruited them across,” Bickley said.
“The two boys in Simon and Dean have done an excellent job as skippers, and John adds some experience.
“They did very well to win the association triples and then go on to win the regional final, so hopefully, they can go another step and win the state final.
“That would be fantastic for them and the club.”
Meanwhile, while the Carters have the state finals to look forward to in April, their immediate focus is on ensuring Kangaroo Flat makes the BBD division one finals.
The Flat sits in third position, but has a tricky run home with games against Eaglehawk, Bendigo East Castlemaine to come.
