BENDIGO East’s Darren Burgess is through to the third round of the men’s singles at the Australian Open lawn bowls championship at Darebin in Melbourne.
Burgess made his way through to the final 32 with straight-set wins in the opening two rounds.
Burgess ousted the highly rated Rowan Brassey in the opening round on Sunday, before disposing of Wayne Turley yesterday.
He’ll play Dennis Arthur in this morning’s third round.
A victory this morning would set up a fourth-round clash with either number two seed Aron Sherriff or Bendigo-raised Aaron Wilson.
Sherriff knocked out Burgess’ Bendigo East teammate Aaron Tomkins in straight sets yesterday.
Wilson, who now plays pennant bowls for Essendon, needed a third-set tie-breaker to defeat Robert Baker in yesterday’s second round.
Strathfieldsaye’s Geoff Walsh was defeated in yesterday’s second round by Nathan Rice.
Golden Square’s Julie Ross, Bendigo’s sole representative in the women’s singles, was knocked out in round one. Bendigo East’s Marc Smith and Travis Bradley advanced to the second round of the men’s pairs.
Aaron Wilson and Mark Flapper, who won last month’s New South Wales Open pairs title, will also play in today’s second round of the pairs.
