THE beer was flowing at Mick Sell’s house last night after the Kyneton trainer cleaned up at his home track yesterday.
Sell trained five winners on the seven-race card, producing a win in each race he had an entry.
The highlight was victory in the NMIT Hanging Rock Cup (1850m), when Craig Robertson guided Enchanting Waters to a 1½ length win in the $20,000 feature.
“It’s like winning a grand final in front of your home crowd,” an emotional Sell said yesterday.
“The beer will definitely be flowing tonight.”
Sell’s day got off to the perfect start when his apprentice Luke Londregan produced an impressive ride to steer Cashzoo ($9.10) to his maiden win in race one.
Vopop ($3.60), Dance Crew ($2) and Whiskey Four ($2.30) followed to make it four wins from four races.
With no runner booked in the fifth, Sell had an anxious wait to see if he could make it the perfect day.
By the time the Hanging Rock Cup rolled around, punters had twigged and the betting rings were flush with support for Enchanting Waters.
The result was never in doubt.
Robertson tucked the $4.20-elect in behind the leader and waited until the turn for home before pushing him into the clear.
Once in the straight, Enchanting Waters bounded away to score impressively.
Sell said he expected four of his five runners to do well, but didn’t expect to clean up.
“The first one (Cashzoo) I was a bit worried about because he drew wide, but the rest I thought were good chances,” he said.
While Sell isn’t the first trainer to produce five winners on a race day – David Hayes trained the first five on the card at Caulfield in 2006 – yesterday’s performance was one for the battlers.
Based out of a small stable at Kyneton, Sell rarely has more than a dozen horses in work.
In fact, the most winners he’d had on a day prior to yesterday was two.
“It’s just a great feeling. I’m pretty high at the moment,” Sell said.
