A LITTLE more than two weeks since the biggest day of his life on a racetrack, normality has well and truly returned for Mick Sell.
Winning five races with five starters on Hanging Rock Cup day was a big achievement and one that will probably never be topped, but that only pays the bills for a short time.
Since Australia Day, Sell has taken six horses to the races and returned home without a winner.
That’s why he can’t afford to rest on his laurels.
“A lot of work went into those horses for the raceday, but you need a lot of luck for that kind of return,” he said.
“I know I’ll probably never have a day like that again, but I’ll have a lot of bloody fun trying.”
Today at Bendigo, Sell saddles up stable favourite Enchanting Waters in the Marong Cup.
After winning the Hanging Rock Cup with relative ease on Australia Day, the seven-year-old mare is expected to start as one of the favourites in the 2200m feature race.
Despite the fact she’s still racing strongly, Sell knows this is likely to be Enchanting Waters’ last season on the track.
“At the moment she’s going really well, so I’ll just keep her going until she tells me she’s had enough,” he said.
There’s no doubt his stable star will be looked after in retirement.
Sell’s had her since he started training four years ago and she’s been involved in most of his career highlights.
The biggest was at Flemington on New Year’s Day in 2010.
A rank outsider in the betting ring, Enchanting Waters stunned punters when she scored a gutsy win at 50-1.
Three months later she ran second in a Listed race in Adelaide.
Not bad for a horse that has “done two tendons”.
According to Sell, she also needs medicine daily as she “ties up”, horse racing speak for a chronic muscle tension condition.
Despite the problems, her trainer is backing her to be hard to beat today.
“She’s in good nick and she seems to be racing well,” he said.
“Hopefully she’ll settle in the first four or five and run over the top of them. I would be surprised if she doesn’t run a good race.”
Today’s Marong Cup starts at 3.25pm today with the first race at 1.05pm.
