Brad teams with Ulysses

04 Nov, 2009 08:40 AM
BRAD Rawiller will be looking for better luck today when he rides Ulysses in the $90,000 Compass Windows Kyneton Cup (2000m).

After finishing seventh on Melbourne Cup favourite Viewed yesterday, Rawiller has a chance to add more silverware to his trophy cabinet today.

Ulysses is backing up after running a gallant sixth in last Wednesday’s Listed Jayco Bendigo Cup (2200m).

The Luke Oliver-trained gelding had to do a fair bit of work from a wide gate at Bendigo, but fought on well to be beaten less than three lengths.

Barrier nine in the 10-horse field makes life a little awkward for Rawiller, but with plenty of speed in the race through the likes of Escape Artist and Sermon, he should be able to slot in midfield.

The drop in distance from 2200m to 2000m will suit Ulysses as well. His best performances have been at 2000m, including a Mornington Cup victory when trained by David Hayes.

The hardest to beat today will be country cups king Bourbonstreetblues.

The seven-year-old gelding is in career best form, having won the Murtoa, Horsham and Terang cups at its past three starts.

Such has been the dominance of its wins, the combined winning margins of the three Cups victories is just less than 10 lengths.

From barrier three the son of Hurrican Sky should get a perfect run behind the speed.Veteran galloper Daka’s Gem looks well placed after running third in last week’s Bendigo Cup.

The winner of last year’s Ballarat Cup on a rain-affected track, Daka’s Gem is also entered for Saturday’s $250,000 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2500m) at Flemington.

The topweight for today’s feature event is Cranbourne Cup-winner Sermon.

The Robbie-Laing-trained stayer only carried 54kg in its Cranbourne Cup win two starts ago, but will have to carry 59kg today.

Laing may opt not to run Sermon today and save it for Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington.

Meanwhile, Nash Rawiller will make a rare riding appearance at Kyneton today.

The Bendigo-raised Rawiller is now based with Gai Waterhouse in Sydney and has not ridden on Kyneton Cup day for some time.

Nash has a handy book of rides today, with his best winning chances appearing to be Parrish in race five, From The Terrace in race six and Rubellite in race eight.
