The top three players at the two-day event at the Kingston Heath Golf Course will gain automatic entry to the Open and Reed is tied for third with eight other golfers.
Reed carded a two-under par 70 yesterday – one stroke behind dual leaders Neven Basic and Chris Gaunt – and he tees off in the second round at 9:21am today.
Qualification for the world’s oldest tournament, to be played at Royal Lytham and St Annes in July, would be a huge boost for Reed, who was unable to retain his OneAsia Tour card for this year.
Reed’s opening round yesterday featured three birdies and one bogey and followed a solid tie for 20th at the Victorian Open played at Spring Valley at the weekend.
After missing the cut at the Victorian Open, fellow Bendigo golfer Andrew Martin had a disappointing day at the Open qualifiers shooting four-over par to be tied for 38th place.
