BENDIGO duo Heath Reed and Andrew Martin will have to wait another year for the chance to play in the British Open.
Reed finished in a tie for 14th and Martin in a tie for 27th after the completion of yesterday’s British Open International Qualifying tournament at Kingston Heath in Melbourne.
With the top three golfers earning a berth in this year’s British Open, Reed was in a strong position in a tie for second going into yesterday’s final round.
However, four bogeys in his first eight holes put paid to Reed’s hopes.
He eventually signed for a five-over par 77 to finish at three-over par, seven shots behind winner Aaron Townsend and four shots out of third place.
Martin was always going to find it tough after shooting a four-over par 76 on day one.
The former Neangar Park junior made light work of yesterday’s tougher conditions to be two-under par through his first seven holes.
A double bogey six on the par-four ninth halted his momentum and he fell away with four more bogeys on the back nine to finish with a second-straight 76.
Ashley Hall and Nick Cullen were the other two players to qualify for the Open.
In a three-man play-off to decide the final two spots, evergreen Peter Senior missed out when he was forced to chip out from trees after he misdirected his second shot on the par-five hole playing into the fierce south-westerly.
All three players had tied for second after 36 holes with a total of 143.
Gutted at missing the play-off was Anthony Brown (71, 73) whose putt on the final green from 1.5 metres horse-shoed out of the cup.
