The old golfing adage of “drive for show, but putt for dough” won’t apply when the Neangar Park Golf Club hosts a round of the Remax World Long Drive Championships next Saturday.
Competitors from across Australia will contest the event, with the winner of the nationwide series qualifying for the world championships final in the USA which has a prize pool of US$500,000.
Neangar Park hosted the event in July last year, when Brendan Moylan won the Open division with a massive 335m shot and Andrew Brennan won the seniors with a 318m drive.
Wheelchair golfer Dave Sawtell set a RWLDC record with his 185m drive last year, while Neangar Park local Shane Lewis won the amateur division with a 309.5m drive.
Other amateur categories include the Super Seniors and Legends.
Professionals will have a series of qualifying sessions, with the top ranked competitors advancing to knockout finals matches.
This year the fairways are expected to run much further than last year’s event and local golfers are encouraged to test their long-hitting abilities.
“It was a fantastic day last year, despite the cooler weather, and with better conditions expected this year, we are fully expecting that someone will drive the ball through the length of our club’s first hole,” Neangar Park club manager Ray Garcia said.
Competitors will start qualifying sessions at 2pm on Saturday February 18, with the final expected to be concluded by 7pm.
