Young guns play on

24 Oct, 2007 09:36 PM
TWO of the Bendigo Telstra Braves’ brightest prospects, Taylor Bell and Patrick Jennings have signed on for the 2008 basketball campaign.

Bell, 20, and Jennings, 22, have been with the Braves senior squad for the past five seasons.

The run has included a national title victory, and back-to-back south conference championships.

A new-look Braves team will be on court next season following the retirement of Jason Cameron, Sam Fotu and Ben Harvey.

For Bell and Jennings there will be great challenges as they aim to capitalise on more court time and having an impact in every match.

Bell’s performance in the conference grand final win was clearly his best game for the club.

‘‘The pressure was right on in that match . . . it was the biggest match I have played for the Braves,’’ Bell said yesterday.

‘‘Next season is going to be a really challenging one.

‘‘The younger players have to step up and be consistent, week by week.’’ It’s an aim that Jennings also has.

After a strong pre-season, Jennings was a standout in several of the Braves games early in 2007.

He is among a guard rotation that includes Warren Randall and Kevin Probert.

Defence is the major strength of Jennings’ play, but he is working on being more of an attacking option.

Although pre-season tip-off is several weeks ago, Bell, Jennings and other team-mates have been on court scrimmaging, and in the gym.

Braves’ coach Wayne Larkins believes Bell and Jennings will have a major impact on the club’s fortunes in ‘08 and beyond.

‘‘We know and they know what they are capable of. The big challenge is having an impact in every match, not 15 points one week, and doing little the next,’’ Larkins said.

‘‘Taylor and Pat are working hard already and will play a big part for us.’’
