Young guns keep firing

TWO of the country's hottest prospects in Aussie Rules and netball, Joel Selwood and Caitlin Thwaites were joint winners for September in The Advertiser Southern Cross TEN Sports Star of the Year award.The latest honour in the RegionalOne-backed awards capped a remarkable year by Selwood and Thwaites on the field and court.Thwaites, 20, is now a four-time monthly winner in Sports Star.In 2007, Thwaites starred in the Melbourne Kestrels attack in the Commonwealth Bank trophy action.The goalshooter was in remarkable form as the Kestrels reached the national netball league's semi-finals.Thwaites won the Shelley O'Donnell Medal as the Kestrels' most valuable player for the second year running.A member of the Australian national squad, Thwaites is also in contention for the Julie Hoornweg-coached Victorian team to compete in the new-look ANZ Championship Trans-Tasman action next year. In her latest campaign, Thwaites dominated for Victoria's attack at the national under-21 netball championships.Victoria won gold as Thwaites scored 43 from 49 attempts in the 61-36 win against the Blues in Brisbane.Geelong's long-awaited premiership victory capped a remarkable AFL debut season by Joel Selwood.The Cats thrashed Port Adelaide by a record margin of 119 points on the MCG.After making his debut in the opening round of the '07 season, Selwood kicked on to star in many of his 18 matches, and then the three finals matches.Selwood's play earned the NAB Rising Star award and he became the first recipient of the Ron Evans Medal.The Geelong midfielder or on-baller polled 44 of a possible 45 votes from the Rising Star judging panel.Selwood was the Cats' No.1 pick and seventh overall in the 2006 AFL national draft. A knee injury restricted Selwood to just three matches for the Bendigo Pioneers in '06.His path to the big league included starring for Kennington-Sandhurst, Sandhurst Football-Netball Club, and Bendigo Pioneers.The Selwood brothers - Adam, Troy and Joel - have starred in the AFL for West Coast, Brisbane Lions and Geelong respectively.The youngest of the clan, Scott, is eligible for next month's national draft.
