The Bendigo Wildcats need only one more win to claim the premiership in the Ice Hockey Victoria junior pee wee division this Sunday at Melbourne’s Icehouse.
The Wildcats will face the Flyers in the second match of the three-game series, with a win resulting in the Wildcats’ first premiership.
Regardless of whether the Bendigo team wins the best of three series, the 2010 result will be the best in the club’s history after a fourth-placing last year.
The Wildcats’ impressive form began last Saturday, with the Bendigo team defeating the Pirates 7-5 in the preliminary final.
Bendigo player Liam O’Brian was one of the best for the Wildcats, scoring one goal and two assists for the match.
Other goal scorers included Tyrone Bronte, Aaron Gasgoigne (two goals) and Baylee Guimond and Elijah Sutton (one goal).
Victory in the preliminary final put the Wildcats into the best of three grand final series against top Melbourne side the Flyers, who Bendigo had lost to in the semi final 9-2 a fortnight ago.
The Bendigo team found a new level of intensity in the first grand final clash, defeating the top side 3-2 and showing an outstanding improvement in defence.
Goalkeeper Jayden Davis had a great match, only allowing two goals past him out of the 14 shots fired at him by the Flyers’ team.
Tyrone Bronte was again among the scoring with two goals.
Declan Bronte was also impressive with one goal and one assist.
The Bendigo Wildcats pee wee ice hockey team is made up of players from Bendigo, Maldon, Gisborne, Axedale, Geelong and across Melbourne.
