Wetter the better

BENDIGO trainer Rod Symons is hoping Victoria’s wet winter continues well into the spring.

Symons’ three-year-old galloper Turiff proved himself to be a mudlark last Sunday when he led all the way to win the $80,000 Chatswood Vase Inglis Bonus (1400m) at Seymour.

The son of King Of Prussia pulled up so well from last Sunday’s win that Symons has decided to run the horse in this Saturday’s Listed $125,000 Henry Bucks Best Dressed Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

“This horse loves the wet and it looks like being a very wet weekend, so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t run him,’’ Symons said.

“It’s going to be a hard race, but he handles the wet and some of the others won’t handle it so well.

“This is a Listed race and we have (Turiff’s) mother at home, so from a breeding point of view it would be great for the family if he could even run a place.’’

Turiff’s mother Nandaly is a half-sister to Symons’ former city-winning mare Devonshire.

Symons has booked star New Zealand jockey Michael Walker for the ride on Turiff on Saturday.

“He’s switched on and hungry for success,’’ Symons said of Walker.

“He’s obviously a very good rider.’’

Symons had planned to end Turiff’s first campaign after he finished second to the Peter Moody-trained Achievements at Sandown on August 4.

“I thought he’d had enough and I put him out at our farm for a couple of weeks,’’ Symons said.

“So for him to come back and win last Sunday’s race on the back of only one week’s work was a good effort. At the same time there was a bias towards leaders at Seymour last Sunday, so we’re not getting too carried away with the win.’’

Symons hasn’t made any long range plans with Turiff.

“While it’s still wet and this bloke is coping with racing, we’ll keep him going,’’ he said.

“He looks like he’ll get over more ground, but most of the breed are sprinters, so we’ll see how he develops.’’
