VICTORIA yesterday made the perfect start to the defence of its division one title at the Australian Country Football Championships in Shepparton.
Victoria, which includes Eaglehawk's Kain Robins and Gisborne's Matt Fitzgerald, won its opening two games of the carnival.
In their first game at Deakin Reserve the Vics, coached by Terry Daniher, defeated Western Australia 5.8 (38) to 3.2 (20).
Victoria then beat New South Wales 8.7 (55) to 3.2 (20) in its second game to end day one of the carnival on top of the ladder.
Fitzgerald kicked a goal in the win over Western Australia, while Robins was named in Victoria's best players in the 35-point victory over New South Wales.
"It was good to start off with a couple of wins," Fitzgerald said last night.
"It was definitely a hot footy and very quick.
"It probably took me half a game to adjust to the tempo, but I got a few touches once the nerves settled down.
"It was probably two or three levels above what we play in the Bendigo league . . . it's as good as footy as I've ever played."
Fitzgerald was part of Victoria's midfield rotation, while Robins played in defence.
"Kain did well for us in the backline," Fitzgerald said.
Victoria will continue its carnival today when it plays South Australia at 12.50pm and the also undefeated ACT at 3.10pm.
The division two carnival begins today at Mooroopna.
Victoria's division two side includes Elmore team-mates Andy Grant, who is the captain, and key forward Ryan Hayes.
Victoria will play title favourite Queensland at 12.15pm and the Aboriginal All Stars at 2pm in its two division two games today.

Meanwhile, in last night's Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League selection news ahead of round 14, South Bendigo regained key defender Marty Shadbolt for its game against Castlemaine at Camp Reserve.
Shadbolt injured his knee in the Bloods' win over Golden Square at the QEO on June 21.
Shadbolt has been named on an extended interchange of seven players for the Bloods, who go into the game sitting in second position.
Castlemaine has an unchanged side to the line-up that held Sandhurst to just one goal on a boggy QEO last Sunday.
In the match of the round at Canterbury Park between third-placed Eaglehawk and top side Golden Square, both sides have made two changes.
Robins is out through his VCFL commitments and fellow defender Luke Button, broken ribs, will miss.
Into the Hawks side are ruckman Josh Metherall and the promising Cody Bravo, who has been promoted from the under-18s.
Hawks captain Brady Herdman has been named at centre half-back in place of Robins.
Golden Square has lost Stacy Fiske to the knee injury that has put his season in doubt, while Brayden Dorrington has been omitted, although he is named as one of three emergencies.
The Bulldogs have included defender Aaron Randall and Ashley Bateman for the game which they must win to retain top.
Sandhurst has suffered a major blow ahead of its tough match against Gisborne at the Queen Elizabeth Oval.
Skipper Michael Cornish has injured his quadricep again, which could spell the end of his season.
It's the second time this season the luckless Cornish has injured his quadricep.
Gisborne has been bolstered by two significant inclusions in classy small forward Darren Farrugia and Stewart Hamilton, who makes a long-awaited return.
