AT LEAST three Bendigo Bombers, and possibly five, will make their debut for the Metricon Bendigo Bombers in tomorrow’s opening round clash of the Victorian Football League season.
Maryborough’s Stewart Crameri, Sandhurst rover Blair Holmes and Gippsland Power graduate James Bristow will play in the VFL seniors for the first time.
The match against Tasmania at Essendon’s Windy Hill will also be Adrian Hickmott’s first match for premiership points as the Bombers coach.
‘‘Stewart Crameri’s athleticism and willingness to learn and improve has really impressed me,’’ Hickmott said last night.
Hickmott coached James Bristow in his one-season stint at Gippsland Power.
‘‘James could play key position in defence or up forward.’’ The hard-running and aggressive Holmes was one of the Bendigo Pioneers best last season.
A `from’ interchange includes Kangaroo Flat clubmates Nathan Meade and Chris Mathieson, who would mark their VFL senior debut if in the final 22.
Hickmott said the Bombers had plenty of running power and would play an attacking style of football.
‘‘Defensive actions will mean a lot in our play, but we also want to attack and really put the opposition under pressure.’’ He is in charge of a young line-up, now captained by James Flaherty, that does have the AFL experience of Damien Peverill, Andrew Welsh, Brent Hartigan and Angus Monfries in tomorrow’s squad of 25.
The 12-10 rule meant Essendon rookies Jarrod Atkinson and Rhys Magin were not selected.
Essendon’s draftees of last year have worked hard at training and will be keen to start the season with a victory.
The young guns on Essendon’s list to watch include ruckman Tom Bellchambers, who is from Launceston, while the Bombers also drafted Tayte Pears and Cale Hooker from the west.
Tomorrow’s clash will start at 2 pm at Windy Hill.
