Sports action at the Southern University Games kicked off yesterday, with students competing in 12 sports across Bendigo. The city’s state of the art sporting facilities are on show for the games, with centres such as Epsom Huntly Recreation Reserve, Bendigo Stadium and the Bendigo Bank Tennis Complex being used.Other centres involved in the games include Strathfieldsaye Recreation Reserve, Club Court Recreation Reserve, Garden Gully Reserve, Flora Hill Stadium and the Dragon City bowling lanes.Games special events assistant and Ballarat University student Jimmy Hunt, said the Epsom Huntly reserve was perfect for the games.“We’ve got touch rugby, football and ultimate frisbee at the reserve,” he said,“It’s fantastic here. We’ve got nothing like this in Ballarat, so it’s fantastic that a facility like this is available.“There is a synthetic grass field up the front for soccer and three grass pitches that we can use for touch and frisbee.”The reserve will host one of the games’ most unusual sports — ultimate frisbee — which Hunt says has been a hit so far at the games. “Ultimate Frisbee has been one of the most talked about sports.“It’s a great atmosphere here and everyone is having an awesome time.“It’s pretty much a sport that everyone can play, that not everyone knows about, so there is a lot of interest.“The Ballarat team here have got three netballers and four hockey players who have never played until these games!”More than 1000 students from universities in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania have come to Bendigo for the games, which will run until tomorrow evening.
