WITH less than three months until Strathfieldsaye’s first game in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football-Netball League, Storm coach Clint Whitsed is confident the club will put together a list capable of winning at least six games in its debut season.Strathfieldsaye will this year become the BFNL’s 10th club and will play its first game on Saturday, April 11, against Castlemaine, a club celebrating its 150th year. The Storm has returned to training after the Christmas-New Year break, with Whitsed saying he is pleased with how the club’s preparations are progressing in the lead-up to the first game, which is now 86 days away. “I would really hate to be a team that comes in and basically, it’s just a waste of time,” Whitsed said yesterday.“We would be really happy if we could come out of the season 50-50; winning half our games would be fantastic.“If we did that we would probably be pushing for finals, but if we were to win somewhere between six to 10 games, we would be very happy with that from where we have come from.“There’s a really good feeling around the club at the moment and it just keeps on building.” Among the Storm’s newest recruits are former Bendigo Bombers’ teammates Michael Pilcher and Jono Gawthrop.Pilcher, a 197cm ruckman, spent two seasons with the Bombers, in which he played two senior games, including the losing 2007 elimination final to North Ballarat.Gawthrop spent last year with the Bombers, playing 15 games in the reserves, plus a senior game against the Box Hill Hawks.“They are the sort of guys we wanted . . . players who have had that higher level of experience with training,” Whitsed said.“They know what it means to work hard on the track and will set the standard for the other guys.” Pilcher will share the Storm’s ruck duties with experienced Mitiamo recruit Tim Wicks.“Tim is an older player, so with Michael (aged 20), it’s the perfect combination,” Whitsed said.Gawthrop was a premiership-winning player with Sandhurst’s under-18s in 2006.He joined the Dragons after playing with Strathfieldsaye Junior Football Club.Whitsed hopes to secure the Storm up to four practice matches before its season-opener against Castlemaine. After it hosts Castlemaine in round one, Storm plays three of last year’s finalists, reigning premier Eaglehawk, South Bendigo and Golden Square, over the following three weeks.
