Sport study draws plenty

Students with an interest in sport will be offered an alternative to mainstream study when Sport Education and Development Australia opens its doors in Bendigo next year.

The SEDA program, which is offered to students heading into years 11 and 12 and school leavers, was established to provide a sports-based study program for students not engaging with mainstream learning or for those looking for a pathway into the sports and recreation industry.

Students who complete the SEDA program will obtain VCE accreditation, Certificate III and IV in Sport and Recreation, Diploma in Sport Development, coaching accreditation, senior first aid, sports training accreditation as well as being on the pathway into degree courses in sports administration, teaching, coaching, sport management and marketing and exercise science.

The SEDA program has grown from 18 students in its first year in 2006 to more than 900 students in the 2010 program.

Regional program development co-ordinator Tim Edwards said SEDA provided an opportunity for students to combine their passion for sport with education.

Edwards said the program was not just for those who struggle with mainstream schooling, but for students who have identified sport and recreation as a path for further tertiary education.

“The best thing about the program is that it caters for a range of students,” he said.

“The beauty of the program is that it attracts students who are not in mainstream schooling.

“It also attracts the kids who want to articulate into university study because the program has such strong links with universities.”

The SEDA program has established links with several major sporting associations, including AFL Victoria, Cricket Victoria, Football Federation Victoria and Netball Victoria.

Next year’s Bendigo program will offer courses in AFL, cricket and soccer, and is open to males and females.

An information session for prospective students in the Bendigo region will be held on on Wednesday, September 1 from 6.30pm at the City of Greater Bendigo offices in Hopetoun Street.
