Roos rejoice

26/04/2008 3:00:15 AM
KANGAROO Flat last night ended its 22-game losing streak in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League with a hard-fought win over Castlemaine at Dower Park.

In what was the first game played under the new lights at Dower Park, the accurate Roos prevailed 16.6 (102) to 13.10 (88) in front of a large Anzac Day crowd that paid a gate of $10,500.

For Kangaroo Flat, it was the club’s first senior win since it defeated North City by 18 points on August 5, 2006.

Season 2008 for the Roos under new coach Darryl Wilson is all about gaining back respect in the BFL.

And last night certainly was a step in the right direction with the young side showing enormous character to fight back from a 144-point belting from Golden Square the week before.

‘‘Obviously, it’s one win, but to see the reaction from the supporters and to see guys crying after this, it’s just fantastic and I’m so pleased for the boys,’’ an elated Wilson said.

Kangaroo Flat was clearly the best side for the majority of the night and started the game superbly.

The Roos kicked the opening four goals of the match inside the first 21 minutes, including two to the experienced Brendan Hehir, who was looking threatening with his strong marking inside 50.

The pacy Kangaroo Flat maintained the ascendancy for the rest of the term and led by 24 points at quarter-time.

By the 22-minute mark of the second quarter the Roos’ advantage had extended to 31 points following a goal to the classy Ryan McNish.

But the Roos couldn’t shake the persistent Magpies, who kicked three of the last four goals of the quarter, including one to Lachlan Ford after the half-time siren, which cut the deficit to 19 points at the main break.

Castlemaine continued to battle valiantly to work back into the contest in the third term through the work of ruckman Orry Cross, the silky Calvin Philp and talented midfielder Brody Culpitt.

The Roos could manage just two goals in the third term - through Hehir and best-on-ground Phil Lobb - while the Magpies booted four in what was their best quarter for the game.
