NATIONAL champions in yachting and kayaking are among the January nominees for the Bendigo Advertiser-WIN Television Sports Star of the Year awards.
The judging panel for the long-running awards, sponsored by bankmecu, will meet today at Bendigo Club in Strathdale.
Last month’s stars included Golden Square’s Brett Goodall, who won the inaugural Viper Nationals yachting title.
Goodall, who teamed with Carolijn Brouwer for the event, won the Viper F-16 catamarans race in testing conditions on Lake Illawarra near Wollongong.
The 27-year-old won his first national sailing title as a teenager and has won Australian titles in Mosquito, Taipan, Formula-18 and now Viper-class boats.
Goodall will travel to Los Angeles in September to compete alongside New South Welshman Jason Waterhouse in the Viper world titles.
Kayaking ace Kristy Packham won the national sprint championship on Tasmania’s Mersey River.
Another of Bendigo’s kayaking stars, Maddie Batters won silver in the rapid sprint for the 18-under class.
Bendigo judo players Kim Jolly and Shayann Stuart won bronze medals at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Cardiff, Wales.
Fighting in the young men’s under-55kg division, Jolly beat England’s Joe Young in the bronze medal fight.
Stuart won bronze in the senior women’s under-52kg division.
Spring Gully tennis ace Eliza Long contested the junior girls’ singles at the Australian Open.
The 16-year-old pushed Japanese player Risa Ozaki to three sets in the junior grand slam at Melbourne Park.
Bendigo and Maryborough water-skiers smashed personal bests at the Australian Masters water-ski tournament in Bridgewater.
Nine personal bests were recorded at the three-day event on the Loddon River, with Maryborough’s Olivia Collicoat recording her best jump of 29.9 metres on her way to winning the women’s under-21 title.
Collicoat broke her personal best at her home course.
Collicoat’s sister Anthea was third overall in the under-17 girls’ division.
Bendigo’s Charlie Bate was third overall in the under-17 boys’ field after setting two personal bests in the slalom and jump.
The Carter family from Kangaroo Flat Bowls Club teamed up to win the regional triples championship.
Father John and sons Dean and Simon Carter convincingly won the triples championship with a 21-7 victory over their Campaspe rivals at Rochester.
Eaglehawk YMCA Athletics Club was the No.1 team at the Athletics Victoria country track and field championships for the fifth year running.
The Hawks won the battle for overall team honours at the La Trobe University Bendigo athletics complex as Bendigo YMCA Harriers finished runner-up, with South Bendigo in fifth place.
Kangaroo Flat’s Blake Pryse capped three gold medal wins at the Victoria Country athletics titles on his home track by earning the Joyce Lockyer Memorial Shield.

A dual Sports Star of the Year, cycling champion Glenn O’Shea won the omnium at the World Cup round in Beijing.
Now based in Adelaide, the cycling star from Eaglehawk is ineligible for this year’s Sports Star award.
