National champions in running for June honour in Bendigo Advertiser-WIN Television Sports Star of the Year award

A COUPLE of national champions are in the race to win the June award in the Bendigo Advertiser-WIN Television Sports Star of the Year.The judging panel for the long-running awards, proudly sponsored by mecu credit union, will meet today at the Bendigo Advertiser.On the netball court, Rebecca Bulley won the Holden Cruze Player of the Year award in the ANZ Championship Series.Bulley starred in defence in the Sydney Swifts unbeaten run to the play-offs.The MVP award winner previously played netball with Calivil United and Sandhurst.Eaglehawk’s Julie Loomes smashed world, national and state records at the national drug-free powerlifting titles. Competing in the 44kg class, Loomes achieved record marks in the squat, bench press and deadlift.Castlemaine’s Sean Finning teamed with Queensland’s Bryce Lindores to win gold in the men’s tandem 88km road race at the Spanish round of the Para-cycling World Cup in Segovia.Catholic College Bendigo’s netball team won the grand final at the 2010 Marist Carnival.An unbeaten run in 16 matches included a one-goal victory in the grand final.Golden Square athlete Brenton Jackson-Dimond earned selection to compete in the sprints and long jump at next year’s Special Olympics Summer World Games in Greece.The Bendigo Volleyball Association’s division one men’s team celebrated a hat-trick of country championship wins as it dominated play in Moe.Weightlifting aces Raelene Eckardt and Kyle Watson earned selection in Victoria’s team to contest this month’s national under-15 titles.The members of the central Victorian YMCA club took out the women’s 69kg plus and men’s 62kg class at the state titles.On the road, cycling star Imogen Jelbart won the Ararat junior two-day tour and Shepparton’s junior classic. Recently selected for the Victorian Institute of Sport track program, Jelbart was the Maxine Crouch Trust Fund recipient in the 2009-10 Sports Star award.Badminton ace Melisa Pearce earned selection in Victoria’s number one squad to contest this month’s national under-19 championships in Launceston.The 16-year-old left-hander will also contest singles, doubles and mixed doubles at the tournament.Talented divers Reuben Roessler, Alex Whitelock, Billie Rodda and Georgia Hinds, and swimmer Rebecca Holmes starred at the School Sports Australia diving and swimming championships in Brisbane.The Bendigo Football Netball League’s under-17 netball team was number one at the William Loud Association Championships at Melbourne’s State Hockey Netball Centre.Bendigo Rowing Club’s Alex Conway earned selection for this month’s international rowing exchange in China.On the ice, figure skater Kassidy-Rae Browell was third in the short program before going on to be fifth in the novice women’s division at the Hollins Trophy in Sydney.
