SEYMOUR’S Peta Mullens sprinted to an impressive victory in last night’s women’s keirin at the Bendigo leg of the Christmas carnival series for cyclists.
Just weeks after taking on the men in a 60-lap madison on the Tom Flood Sports Centre track, Mullens was back and starring in Bendigo.
The Godfrey Family-backed keirin was the fourth leg of the women’s omnium which began in Horsham and followed on at Maryborough’s two-day carnival and winds up at tonight’s series finale in Shepparton.
Despite the cool and windy conditions in Bendigo, Mullens was in hot form as she raced to victory ahead of the in-form Samantha Wood, young gun Laine Hammond and Beth Canny.
Back in Victoria from Western Australia, Wood’s series began with victory in her old hometown of Horsham and included winning the feature race at Maryborough’s Goldfields carnival.
Cycling’s young stars also shone in Bendigo.
Ararat’s Alice Frele won the under-17 girls’ 1000m wheelrace.
Another of the stars in the under-17 girls’ events, Bendigo’s Imogen Jelbart added to this season’s winning spree in the A grade six-lap scratch race.
In the second of the A grade scratch races, Stephanie Hansen beat Kelly Mackie and Natasha Lankedyk.
In the under-15 boys’ action, Braeden Dean also starred on his home track.
Adding to the family tradition in cycling, Braeden won both of the A grade scratch races which were six and four laps.
