Kangaroo Flat in unfamiliar territory in BFL

29 Apr, 2008 04:00 AM
KANGAROO Flat was one of the stories of round two of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League last weekend when it defeated Castlemaine by 14 points.

The victory snapped a 22-game losing streak for the Roos, dating back to round 15 of the 2006 season.

However, the 16.6 (102) to 13.10 (88) win over the Magpies under lights at Dower Park ended another drought for Kangaroo Flat.

For the first time since the 2002 season, Kangaroo Flat finds itself inside the top five on the BFL ladder.

The win over Castlemaine has the Roos positioned fifth on the ladder with a 1-1 record.

It’s the first time since round six of the 2002 season the Roos are inside the top five.

Before last weekend, the last time Kangaroo Flat sat inside the BFL’s top five was back in late May 2002, when Derrick Filo was at the helm of the club as coach.

The Roos occupied fifth spot on the ladder with a 4-2 record after round six, 2002, following a 47-point victory over the struggling Kyneton.

Also in the top five with the Roos at that time were top-of-the-ladder Gisborne (5-0), Golden Square (3-2), South Bendigo (4-2) and Maryborough (3-2).

Sandhurst (3-3), Eaglehawk (1-4), Castlemaine (1-4) and Kyneton (0-5) filled the bottom four rungs.

However, the Roos would lose their top-five position the following week after a 91-point defeat to eventual premier Gisborne at Gardiner Reserve.

It would take the Roos almost 100 games to get back into the top five.

Since Kangaroo Flat was last in the top five, the club has had six different senior coaches - Filo, Phil Carman, Chris Harrington, Damien Brown, John Rombotis and Darryl Wilson - and won just seven of 96 games.

The challenge now for Kangaroo Flat is to win two games in a row, again, something the Roos haven’t been able to achieve since 2002.But it won’t be an easy task against South Bendigo at the Queen Elizabeth Oval this Sunday.

The last time the Roos strung together more than one win in a row was when they won four straight games between rounds three and six of 2002, defeating Castlemaine (31 points), South Bendigo (29 points), Eaglehawk (six points) and Kyneton (47 points).

This weekend’s round three BFL games: Kyneton v Golden Square, Sandhurst v Maryborough (night), South Bendigo v Kangaroo Flat (Sunday).
