BENDIGO full bore rifle shooter Geoff Grenfell has qualified for next year’s Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
The 48-year-old was this week confirmed as Australia’s first of two representatives in the full bore event.
Grenfell has an unassailable lead at the top of the Australia Cup progressive points table going into the final event in Brisbane in June.
“It’s exciting to know that I’ve made it,” Grenfell said yesterday.
“All the hard work has paid off and there’s no pressure to perform well in the final event.”
Grenfell, who won gold in the same event at the Commonwealth Games in Canada in 1994, has had a standout year winning two Australia Cups, one Queens and two pairs matches.
“After winning the gold medal in 1994, I put my international ambitions on hold because I got married and we started a family,” the 1994-95 The Advertiser-Southern Cross TEN Sports Star of the Year winner said.
“Now my kids are at school and I can devote more time to my shooting. I feel as though I’m shooting better now than I ever have.”
Last year’s bombing in Mumbai has been in Grenfell’s thoughts as he thinks ahead to the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October next year.
“It’s been the subject at the kitchen table a couple of times,” Grenfell admitted.
“The security issues are with those in charge and I’m just waiting to see what happens. I know there’s been some inspections done of the shooting range to be used in India, because there was talk there hadn’t been any work done on it. There’s still a while to go . . . I’ll wait and see what decisions are made.”
