GISBORNE delivered the upset of the Bendigo Football Netball League season, defeating powerhouse Sandhurst by eight goals in the A grade netball clash on Saturday at Gardiner Reserve.
Gisborne was the only team to defeat the Sandhurst A grade team in the home and away series last year.
Gisborne beat the maroon and blue in round 13 last season.
In the latest contest, Gisborne broke away from Sandhurst in the third term, outscoring the ladder leaders 14-5 to gain a nine-goal buffer heading into the final term.
Goal defence Polly Salter was among the best for Gisborne, while midcourt player Tarryn Rymer was too strong through the centre.
The win elevated Gisborne to third place at the completion of the home and away season, earning a second chance in the finals series.
Kangaroo Flat secured a second place finish after defeating Eaglehawk 36-29 at Canterbury Park.
Flat’s centre Lauren Cowling and goaler Brooke Emmerson were in top form.
Golden Square will head into the finals with confidence, following an 11-goal victory against Strathfieldsaye at Country Vet Oval.
Square used several combinations in goal, with Jessica Geary and Louise Dupuy both scoring 17 goals, while Kath Basilewsky also contributed with 15 goals.
Ashlee Barbetti was best for the Storm, scoring 22 goals for her team.
At the QEO, South Bendigo registered its second win for the season, defeating Castlemaine 47-41.
The BFNL finals will begin this Saturday at the QEO, with the 17-and-under qualifying final between Kangaroo Flat and Gisborne at 2pm, followed by the B grade qualifying final between Eaglehawk and Golden Square at 3.30.
The A reserve elimination final between Eaglehawk and Golden Square starts at 5pm, and the A grade qualifying final between Kangaroo Flat and Gisborne at 6.30pm.
Finals will continue on Sunday, with the 17-and-under qualifying final between Maryborough and Golden Square at 10.30, the B grade elimination final between Strathfieldsaye and Kangaroo Flat at noon, and A reserve qualifying final between Strathfieldsaye and Kangaroo Flat at 1.30pm.
The A grade elimination final between Eaglehawk and Golden Square starts at 3pm on the Bendigo Aquatic Centre court.
