THE Gisborne line-up dominated yesterday’s A grade netball match on Golden Square’s court to complete the eighth round of the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football-Netball League season.
In a highly-anticipated match between second and third on the ladder, Gisborne took control early and never let up.
The Golden Square team battled to match Gisborne’s physical play, slick passing and powerful attack.
Goalshooter Christine Harris was in superb form for Gisborne, and the mid-court set up repeated attacks in a 52-26 victory at Country Vet Oval in Wade Street.
Harris earned the four votes in the ASM Netballer of the Year award.
In Saturday’s play, Kangaroo Flat and Eaglehawk battled through the wet conditions on the court at Fulton-Hogan Oval at Dower Park.
Defences were in control as the goalers struggled to catch passes.
Kangaroo Flat won an exciting contest with the Two Blues by a goal.
Roos’ centre Lauren Cowling was in great form, along with Alicia McGlashan.
Eaglehawk’s best were coach Amanda O’Neill and Christie Carmody.
The defenders were to the fore in the match between the ladder-leading Sandhurst and Castlemaine on the QEO court.
The play of Chelsey Williams in the goal circle was a highlight of Castlemaine’s play.
Williams intercepted many passes and teammate Kirby Jefferies also played well against the maroon and blue.
Kasey Lawrence was strong on the last line of defence for Sandhurst, and Claire Gibbs was on target in an 84-8 victory.
At Princes Park, Maryborough beat South Bendigo by 22 goals.
Alishia Chadwick and Cindy Cossar were best for the Magpies, and Justine Fitzgibbon played well for the red and white.
In the A reserve competition, Kangaroo Flat fought on to beat Eaglehawk by two goals.
Lauren Swatton played well for Kangaroo Flat, and Bridget McDougall was Eaglehawk’s best.
The South Bendigo line-up won at Maryborough by six goals, and Sandhurst dominated the clash with Castlemaine.
At Kyneton, Strathfieldsaye Storm beat the Tigers by 14 goals.
In B grade, Eaglehawk made a spirited fightback in the second half, but Kangaroo Flat held on to win 27-20.
Bec Connaughton was best for the Roos, and Kahlia Osborne played well for Eaglehawk.
The day’s play began with the 17-and-under teams on court.
Kangaroo Flat teamed well in every quarter, and Ally Swift starred in attack to score a 40-21 win against Eaglehawk.
Swift earned best-on-court honours, while Amy Jackson was best for Eagleahawk’s young stars.
