Geary joins Sandy

04 Feb, 2010 09:12 AM
BENDIGO Pioneers club champion Kallen Geary has signed with VFL club Sandringham.

A shock non-selection in last year’s AFL national draft and AFL rookie draft, Geary was chased heavily by several VFL clubs, including the Bendigo Bombers.

However, the Victorian Country representative decided to move to Melbourne and join the St Kilda-aligned Zebras.

“It’s with no disrespect to the Bendigo Bombers that I signed with Sandringham,” Geary told The Advertiser yesterday.

“I think the Bombers are going to be a good side this year.

“I needed a change from Bendigo and I was keen to live in Melbourne.”

Sandringham was the perfect fit for Geary, with his older brother Jarryn playing with the club when not selected by St Kilda.

“Obviously, the prospect of maybe playing with Jarryn was a part of the decision,” Kallen said.

“Hopefully, he plays all season with St Kilda and he’s not at Sandringham.

“St Kilda and Sandringham have a really good relationship and the club is trying to execute similar game plans to St Kilda.”

Sandringham is coached by former Melbourne rover Andy Lovell.

“It looks as though the club is going to be pretty strong,” Geary said.

“Training is going well . . . I can’t wait to get stuck into the practice games.”
