THE Bendigo Football-Netball League’s city-based clubs will again dominate this year’s finals series.
Of the 35 teams that have qualified for this year’s finals across the three football and four netball grades, 27 are from city clubs.
Last year the figure was 28 city-based teams that made the finals.
As it was last year, Sandhurst is the BFNL’s champion club of the home and away season.
Of the Dragons’ 122 football and netball games, they won a remarkable 107
Across the seven competitions, Sandhurst had five teams finish on top of the ladder – their reserves football side and all four netball teams.
Between the Dragons’ four powerful netball teams, they lost just two of their 68 games.
But the Sandhurst netballers will know from last year that having such a dominant home and away season doesn’t guarantee the ultimate success.
Last year Sandhurst finished on top of all four netball grades, winning 62 of 66 games, and while the Dragons ended the season with three premierships, their A grade team didn’t make it to the grand final after being knocked out in straight sets.
While Sandhurst has all seven teams in the finals, so too does Golden Square.
However, over the course of the season Golden Square with 89 victories won 18 less games than Sandhurst.
The Bulldogs had their senior and under-18 football teams finish on top of the ladder, meaning that all seven minor premierships have been claimed by either Golden Square or Sandhurst.
The top six clubs on the 2010 club champion ladder are all city-based.
In only its second season Strathfieldsaye improved from seventh overall last year to fourth.
In its debut season last year the Storm won 44 home and away games as a club; this year it won 64 and has three teams contesting the finals.
The club that has finished on the bottom of the ladder this year is Castlemaine, which won 17 of its 122 games.
The Magpies had four of their teams – senior football, A grade, A reserve and 17-under netball – go through the season without winning a game.
However, Castlemaine’s A reserve netball team did have a draw.
The only club that won’t be represented in the finals will be Kyneton, which had all its teams – of which there was only five instead of seven – finish seventh or lower.
Kyneton won 20 games this year, which was four times as many as last season when the Tigers won just five.
On the football field, eight of the 10 clubs will be represented in the finals.
The 2010 BFL finals start this weekend at the QEO.
