BENDIGO trainer Matthew Enright has not given up hope of stable star Majestical forcing its way into Saturday week’s $2.5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Majestical, a $61 chance in the Caulfield Cup, is a lowly 54th in the order of entry for the Group One classic and faces an uphill battle to make the final field.
Even a win in this Sunday’s $150,000 Cranbourne Cup might not be enough for the five-year-old to burst into Caulfield Cup contention.
However, Enright is keeping his options open and will today pay another Caulfield Cup acceptance fee for Majestical.
“It’s going to be very hard for him to make the field, but we’ll still pay up tomorrow,’’ Enright told The Advertiser yesterday.
“Running second in the JRA Cup (last start at Moonee Valley) has probably cost him.
“If he doesn’t get in the Caulfield Cup, he doesn’t get in.
“We could have run him at Caulfield this Saturday (Winning Edge Stakes), but I didn’t want to run him over 2400m.
“That’s why we’ve gone to Cranbourne and if that’s not enough to get him into the Caulfield Cup we’ll live with it.
“There’s other serious options for him over the carnival.’’
Enright is toying with the idea of dropping Majestical back to the feature 1600m races if he doesn’t qualify for the Caulfield Cup.
“He’s had three starts over the mile for me and won all three,’’ he said.
“Who knows, he might be a better miler rather than a 2400m horse.
”We could certainly look at the Waterford Crystal Mile (Moonee Valley Cox Plate day) and then the (Group One) Emirates Stakes at Flemington.
“The great thing about this horse is that we have so many options. It’s a nice problem to have.’’
Majestical has impressed Enright with his work since his narrow defeat to Cefalu at the Valley 10 days ago.
“He hasn’t taken a step backwards. He’s right on song for Cranbourne,’’ he said.
“He should get in well at the weights, and the field might drop away a bit with all the good races that are on at the moment.’’
Regular rider Wayne Hokai will attend his brother’s wedding in New Zealand this Saturday.
“Wayne’s going to let me know tomorrow if he will be back on Sunday for the ride,’’ Enright said.
“If he’s not back we’ve offered the ride to Damien Oliver as long as the horse gets enough weight for Damien to ride him.
“Kerrin McEvoy’s manager has also been in contact with us chasing the ride.’’
