GOLDEN Square is set to lead the push for the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League to increase its interchange bench in the senior competition from three to four players.
Golden Square will use tomorrow night’s annual general meeting to propose an amendment to the BFL by-law that would allow an extra player to be included on the bench for senior games.
“Three on the bench is something that has fascinated us for a while,” Bulldogs coach Nick Carter said yesterday.
“I understand the decision to keep the bench at three was made on economic grounds previously.
“However, if we are true to the game of Australian Rules, both in its current state and future evolvement, an increase to four on the bench is a no-brainer and well overdue.
“The game is evolving and I think that three to four years ago Bendigo football took a step in advancing the style of football that is played.
“High rotation football was probably brought in by Mick McGuane at Gisborne and other clubs have clearly followed.
“The AFL game will continue to evolve and I think that six on the interchange bench is a highly likely outcome in the short term at that level.
“Four on the bench is a no-brainer in the BFL, and I don’t accept the economic reasoning for three on the bench, as on average it would equate to less than an extra $1000 per year for a club to have an extra player.”
The topic of increasing the senior interchange from three to four players has been brought up twice in the past two years at BFL president’s meetings, but it hasn’t been supported.
