Bendigo Football Netball League coaching positions filled

19 Nov, 2009 08:34 AM
ALL 10 coaching positions are now filled in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo Football League for the 2010 season.

LUKE WEST takes a look at who is coaching your team next year.

CASTLEMAINE - Paul Eyles: the last of the coaches to be appointed as he replaces Jamie Elliott.

Eyles isn’t new to Camp Reserve, having previously coached the Magpies in 2004 and 2005 when Castlemaine was beaten in the first semi-final in both seasons, while he is a premiership player with the club.

While Eyles was a playing coach in 2004-05, for this stint he will call the shots from the sidelines.

EAGLEHAWK - Derrick Filo: there was plenty of innuendo following the Hawks’ elimination final loss this year to Kangaroo Flat that Filo’s tenure at Canterbury Park could be coming to an end.

But just as he has done since 2003, Filo will again lead Eaglehawk, and has already put together a list that should have the Hawks looming as the biggest dangers to Golden Square’s bid for back-to-back flags.

Since taking the reins at Eaglehawk, Filo has coached the club in 136 matches for a 91-45 record, which includes the grand final victories of 2007-08.

GISBORNE - Ty Elliott: will be back for a second season at the helm of the Bulldogs.

After coaching Gisborne’s reserves to the premiership in 2008, Elliott took on the senior coaching role this year, and despite suffering an exodus of key players, guided the Bulldogs to the second week of the finals before they were bounced out in straight sets.

GOLDEN SQUARE - Nick Carter: the well-known Bendigo football figure moves in to the next phase of his career as senior coach of the Bulldogs.

Carter has a vast amount of experience behind him, having played 25 AFL games and eight years of VFL with the Bendigo Diggers and Bombers.

Has indicated he will be a non-playing coach at this stage, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Carter, now a Bulldogs’ premiership player, out on the park at various stages next year.

Carter has taken over from premiership coach Mark Adamson and will have a list that already appears stronger than the one which breezed through this year’s finals to the flag.

KANGAROO FLAT - Murray Collins: another new coach in the BFL for 2010.

Collins has been an assistant coach at the Roos to Darryl Wilson over the past two years, but was appointed senior coach once Wilson left to take up the position of football manager with WAFL club Peel.

However, Wilson has since resigned from the position at Peel and moved back to Bendigo, but Collins will stay as Roos’ coach.

Collins has senior coaching experience in the BFL, having guided Kennington in the early ‘90s, while he is also a premiership coach with Mount Pleasant.

KYNETON - Paul Houston: will lead the Tigers for a second season.

In his first season this year the Tigers finished on the bottom of the ladder, with their sole victory an eight-point win over Eaglehawk in round three.

Houston, who has previously been involved at VFL level with Williamstown, has already landed three recruits from the Victorian Amateur Football Association who come with big wraps - Daniel Cooper, Jim Condos and Rob Trajkovski.

MARYBOROUGH - Shane Fisher: will coach the Magpies for a third season.

Fisher took Maryborough to the finals for the first time since 2004 in his debut season in 2008, before the Magpies dropped to seventh this year.

While Fisher showed this year he still has plenty to offer as a player, a knee injury may mean he is kept sidelined for the season.

SANDHURST - Keiran Nihill: has two years’ experience under his belt now as the Dragons’ senior coach.

After winning just one game in 2008, the Dragons were the most improved side in the competition this year as they won nine to finish just four points outside the top five.

Nihill is one of Sandhurst’s favourite sons, having played in the 2004 premier

ship, and this year passing the 200-game milestone.

SOUTH BENDIGO - Rick Coburn: will guide the Bloods for a fourth season, having taken over in 2007.

In his three seasons Coburn has led the Bloods to a preliminary final, first semi-final and grand final, where they lost to Golden Square this year.

As for Coburn’s playing future, that’s still up in the air after the injury to his neck-shoulder area suffered in the preliminary final win over Kangaroo Flat.

STRATHFIELDSAYE - Clint Whitsed: had arguably the toughest coaching job in country Victoria this year with his appointment at the brand-new club, which was started from scratch.

With a year of hard work now under his belt in building a list, Whitsed will lead the Storm into its second season, with the side looking to build on its respectable four wins of 2009.
