Beach series in city heart

07 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
TOP-FLIGHT beach volleyball will be played in the heart of Bendigo next month.

A three-day series of matches will be played on a specially set-up court in Williamson Street from December 11 to 13.

Vic Beach operations director, Greg Jury said the tournament would be run on the car park near the old Post Office, now home to the Tourist Information Centre, and at the Tom Flood Sports Centre.

“We will have 110 cubic metres of sand trucked in,” Jury said of setting up the court near the Shamrock Hotel.

It’s the first time a beach volleyball event of this size will have been run in Bendigo.

Among those taking to the court will be Caitlin Thwaites, a mutliple monthly winner in The Advertiser WIN Television Sports Star of the Year award, which is proudly sponsored by RegionalOne Credit Union.

An Australian junior representative in volleyball, Thwaites is now starring as a goalshooter for the Melbourne Vixens in the Trans-Tasman netball league, and has earned selection in the Australian Diamonds squad.

“Bendigo appealed to us for a lot of reasons,” Jury said of the decision to bring the Virgin blue-backed Victorian beach volleyball series to the heart of Victoria.

“Bendigo has one of the strongest volleyball communities in the state.”

Entries for the corporate challenge to be run on December 11 are being taken.
