BENDIGO will host the National Squash Championships for the deaf this weekend.
Several local competitors are hoping to challenge for the Australian title as Bendigo hosts the biannual event for the first time.
Australian Deaf Squash Association secretary and local talent Jo Richards has had to withdraw from the event because of a knee injury.
But Richards is still excited the biggest event on the national deaf squash calendar is being played in her hometown.
“Everybody is welcome to come and watch the deaf play squash and be involved with our culture,’’ she said.
“Sport is an important part of the deaf community.’’
Blake Mewburn, Dechlan Birt, Kerry Pagram and Andrea Huggard are the local hopefuls in the event, which features singles play and determines the members of the Australian team to compete in the World Championships in 2010.
