The Loddon Mallee Football Club had the better of the Northern All-Stars in round 13 of the Victorian Champions League at the weekend.
The Lightning travelled to Epping to face the All-Stars and returned with three wins, a loss and three draws.
Loddon Mallee’s under-15 girls dominated their opponents to win 7-0, while the under-17 and under-13 girls’ teams both won by two goals, with the scores 3-1 and 2-0 respectively.
The under-13 and under-17 boys drew 1-all in their matches, while the under-14 boys went down 3-1.
In the match of the day, the eight-placed Loddon Mallee under-15 boys side took on the third-placed All-Stars outfit in windy conditions.
Playing with the breeze in the first-half, the Lightning players were unable to make the most of their advantage as the All-Stars attacked relentlessly.
Lightning goalkeeper Ben Lewin was under immense pressure from the kick-off, but did an excellent job to keep the deficit to 1-0 at half-time.
Despite playing into the breeze in the second half, the Lightning kept looking to attack and a piece of individual brilliance from Joe Williams levelled the scores at 1-1.
Williams ran 80m downfield and broke through the All-Stars’ defence to slot a goal underneath the goalkeeper’s outstretched arm.
The All-Stars responded with more attacks to go ahead once more, but the Lightning were level within minutes after a superb finish from range by Steve Robinson.
The match ended 2-2.
Sam Scoble was the best player for the Lightning and the result kept the club in eighth place on the ladder.
Loddon Mallee’s next matches are against Central City at the State Football Centre in Darebin this Sunday.
