HEATHCOTE recovered from a three quarter-time deficit to defeat North Bendigo in their Heathcote District Football League clash at Barrack Reserve on Saturday. The Bulldogs had led by five points at the final change. However, renowned as a side with an ability to find a way to win, the Saints did so again, kicking seven goals to three in the last quarter to prevail 14.24 (108) to 13.6 (84).The victory came a week after the Saints had drawn with boRttom side Mount Pleasant.“We copped a fair bit of flak off a lot of outsiders after last week, but we showed a lot of character today,” Saints coach Brent Chapman said.“I’m sure there were a lot of eyes on us to see how we would respond after last week, and it was just an even spread of contributions from the 22 blokes.’’The Saints kept the Bulldogs in the contest with their wayward kicking at goal.At three quarter-time when they trailed, the Saints had scored 10 more times than North Bendigo, but had a woeful 7.19.“Our kicking really let us down,” said Chapman, who kicked one goal in his first senior game of the year after undergoing a pre-season shoulder reconstruction.“We went a bit wide when we were going forward and had shots from the pockets, rather than going direct.”On-baller Marc Millard (four goals), Luke Bell and Lech Featherstone (two goals) were the best for the Saints.Mick Galvin, James Green and coach Damien Lock played well for the Bulldogs, while the classy Aarryn Craig continued his fine season with four goals.● Elmore ended its two-game losing streak with a 15.9 (99) to 9.7 (61) victory over Leitchville-Gunbower at Gunbower.Having lost their previous two games, combined with a club and inter-league bye over the past month, it was Elmore’s first win since May 14.“Leitchville had a real crack today, but we were able to get the win, which is what we needed,’’ Elmore coach Andy Grant said.Among the best for the Bloods was new recruit Tom Grant, who joined Elmore late last week from Mitiamo, where he was a 2009 premiership player.Key forward Simon Weekley booted seven goals for the Bloods to be their best player.Josh Edgar was the standout for the Bombers, who were jumped in the first term when they trailed 4.5 to 0.2 at quarter-time.● Lockington-Bamawm United handed Colbinabbin its biggest loss for six years. The Cats won by 111 points, 22.15 (147) to 5.6 (36), at Colbinabbin. It was the first time Colbinabbin had lost by a triple-figure margin since going down to Elmore by 100 points in round 17, 2005.Cats coach Kahl Oliver booted seven goals, while midfielders Matt Bongiovanni, Mick Dobson and Adrian Dohnt were also outstanding.Matt Riordan and Darcy Booth battled hard for the Grasshoppers, who were already 65 points down at half-time.● White Hills maintained third spot after a 24.13 (157) to 10.7 (67) win over Huntly at Huntly. The Hawks were competitive in the first half, kicking eight goals, but the floodgates opened in the second when the Demons slammed on 12 goals to two.Big man Matt Lehane was brilliant for the Demons with six goals.
