THE Bendigo Bank Bombers are back in the VFL top four after a commanding 73-point win over the Box Hill Hawks at Windy Hill yesterday. The Bombers charged away from the Hawks in the second half as they won 21.15 (141) to 10.8 (68).The victory improves the Bombers’ record to 7-3, and after 12 rounds they sit fourth – a game clear of the fifth-placed Casey Scorpions, who were surprise losers to the Coburg Tigers yesterday. The Bombers had led by just six points at half-time, 8.6 to 7.6, before dominating the last hour of the game as they added 13 goals to three to cruise to their third victory in a row.“We were a bit disappointing in the first half,” Bombers coach Shannon Grant said.“We weren’t as sharp as we have been, which is full credit to Box Hill, but we were able to lift after half-time and I thought we were pretty good.”Former Bendigo Pioneer Ariel Steinberg – who is in his first year at Essendon – played his best game of the season for the Bombers.Steinberg booted five goals, taking his season tally to 15.In his return from injury, forward Scott Gumbleton kicked three goals, while Mark Williams and Tory Dickson also bagged three each.Jay Neagle, who played forward and ruck, was named best for Bendigo, along with Williams, Jake Carlisle, Kyle Reimers, who recovered from a heavy knock early in the game, Steinberg and Ricky Dyson. The win ended Box Hill’s domination over Bendigo, with the Hawks having beaten the Bombers in their previous five clashes by an average of 62 points. The Bombers will make a long-awaited return to the Queen Elizabeth Oval this Saturday when they host the second-placed Williamstown. It will be the Bombers’ first game at the QEO since May 30 last year when they lost to the Casey Scorpions by six points.
